Al Shabab, Seongnam win in Asian Champions League

SEOUL (AP)—Saudi Arabian clubs Al Shabab and Al Hilal are well positioned to reach the semifinals of the Asian Champions League after they recorded impressive wins Wednesday in the first leg of their quarterfinals.

Al Hilal dominated Al Gharafa of Qatar in a 3-0 home victory.
Seongnam Ilhwa of South Korea, meanwhile, had a 4-1 home win against domestic rivals Suwon Blue Wings while Iranian club Zob Ahan came away with a win after Mahdi Rajabzadeh converted a 75th-minute penalty to secure a 2-1 victory over defending champions Pohang Steelers of South Korea.
Igor Castro, who earned the home team the penalty, had given Zob Ahan the lead in the 18th, but Brazilian compatriot Mota equalized for Pohang Steelers in the 56th.
Al Shabab scored midway through the second half when Fahad Hamad knocked in a rebound from a saved shot, and despite being reduced to ten men late in the half when Abdulmalek Al Khaibri was dismissed, the Saudi club still boosted its advantage ahead of the second leg with a goal from Uruguyan Juan Manuel Oliveira.
Oliveira, who had a prolific stint with Universidad de Chile, helping that club to the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores, had been signed for the Saudi club by Al Shabab’s new Uruguayan coach Jorge Fossati.
Al Hilal dominated much of the match against a clearly outclassed Al Gharafa and secured the emphatic win with goals from Mohammed Al Shalhoub, Ahmed Al Fraidi and Indianapolis Colts jersey
substitute Waleed Algizani.
Al Hilal got things going early after only 13 minutes, as Thiago Neves fed a pass into the area that the defense failed to clear. The ball eventually fell to Yasser Al Qahtani, who then fed Al Shalhoub and the midfielder slid it past keeper Abdulaziz Abdulla’s near post.
Al Hilal threatened several more times before halftime, including a cross from Al Shalhoub from the left that Neves failed to get his foot on. Neves flicked another shot wide just after halftime before his free kick was fumbled by Abdulla, allowing Al Fraidin to score.
Al Hilal completed the victory with their third with five minutes remaining when Algizani got past two defenders and managed to fire a low shot into the back of the net.
Seongnam, more accustomed to the poor and uneven playing surface on its home ground, won convincingly over Suwon.
Seongnam’s Montenegran striker Dzenan Radoncic opened the scoring in Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

Both teams were guilty of some bad misses before Radoncic headed home powerfully to make it 3-1 and, it was made 4-1 in the closing stages when So Hong-yeung’s attempt was bundled into the net.
