24 Jan 11 Georgia-Colorado: Bulldogs Win As Road Favorites Over Buffaloes

Mike Zarrilli/Getty ImagesThis Saturday the Colorado Reebok Green Bay Packers #12 Aaron Rodgers Realtree camo Jersey
Buffaloes will host the Georgia Bulldogs in an important non-conference game for both teams. Georgia desperately needs a win this weekend, as they fell to 1-3 on the season after losing at Mississippi State 12-24. Colorado got an early bye last week, and come into the game with wins over Hawaii and Colorado State, but also have a big time loss at home to California 7-52. This is only the second meeting between the two schools, with Georgia grabbing the only win 14-13 at home in 2006. If you are thinking about betting on the game this weekend, the current college football odds have the Bulldogs favored by 4.5-points over the Buffaloes on the road.Georgia (1-3, 0-3 SEC): With the last loss against Mississippi State the Bulldogs found themselves in a huge hole in conference play, as they have already lost three conference games. The seat is getting very hot for head coach Mark Richt, as he wonmake it through the season if the Bulldogs donstart winning. Georgia really killed themselves against Mississippi State, as they fumbled the ball twice, including once just a yard from a touchdown, and had numerous penalties that really hurt them, as they actually outgained the Rebels 387 to 314.The Bulldogs got a solid performance out of quarterback Aaron Murray, who threw for 274 yards and a touchdown on 18 of 31 passing. Murray also ran for 32 yards on seven carries. There is no question that Murray and the offense miss the play of star wide receiver A.J. Green, who is expected to make his return Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
this week against Colorado. I expect Green to make an immediate impact once he steps on the field, and I think we could see Georgia roll off a few wins in a row to get back to above .500.Colorado (2-1, 0-0 Big 12): The Buffaloes will finish up their non-conference portion of the schedule this week. While Colorado comes in with a winning record, there is still a lot of room for improvement for this team. The Buffaloes got off to a slow start against Hawaii in their last game, as they trailed 10-0 at half, before pouring on 31 points in the final two periods of play.Quarterback Tyler Hansen had a pretty nice day throwing the football, completing 19 of 26 attempts for 200 yards and two touchdowns. The Buffaloes however did most of their damage on the ground, as they ran for 252 yards as a team. Brian Lockridge accounted for 109 yards on 14 carries, and Rodney Stewart had 106 yards and two touchdowns on 22 attempts. It will be interesting to see if the Buffaloes can have that same kind of success against a solid SEC defense like Georgia.Looking at the Odds: With Green back in the mix for the Bulldogs, I think you have to take Georgia to cover the 4.5-point spread in this game. Green will force Colorado to put more attention on him, which I believe will help out Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
the running game as well as the other receivers. I think Colorado is going to really struggle to move the ball against the Georgia defense. My final score prediction is Georgia 27, Colorado 17.Interested in making some money this college football season? 22 Jan 11 Florida State-BYU: Young Seminoles Look Good in All Phases as They Crush Cougars

Chris Thompson's first touch of the game was an electrifying 83-yard TD run.Florida State got back on track Saturday with a 34-10 win at home against an overmatched BYU team that traditionally doesndo well on the East Coast.Once again, coach Jimbo Fisher relied heavily on his freshmen and sophomores, as the Seminoles pulled away in the second half, turning a close game into a rout. The Seminoles had ample chances to blow the game open early on, but mistakes, penalties, questionable calls, and bad luck prevented FSU from getting into the end zone.On successive drives of 52 and 62 yards, the 'Noles could only muster three points. The first of the two drives ended when Bert Reed fumbled the ball inside the Cougar 10-yard line, as a Seminole player inadvertently struck Reed and jarred the ball loose. The Kansas City Chiefs jersey
second drive ended in a field goal after Christian Ponder threw a third-down pass over 66 receiver Rodney Smith and into the stands.Whereas the Seminoles offense was a bit out of sync in the first quarter, the defense was stingy, only allowing BYU to gain 29 yards on three drives. They forced two punts and swiped an interception. The Cougars fumbled the ball on their opening drive of the second quarter, resulting in an FSU field goal. BYU would then punt on its next drive. The Seminoles took the field, and on first down, speed demon Chris Thompson took a handoff off the left side, and thanks to a perfect block thrown by fullback Lonnie Pryor, he bolted up the sideline for an 83-yard touchdown. The Noles now led 13-0.FSU stumbled in somnambulance through the rest of the second quarter, as their offense went from out of sync to all-out sputtering. The defense began to falter as well.BYU answered with two successive drives that yielded 10 points, as they marched up and down the field with ease.By halftime, FSUlead was now 13-10, and BYU's stats (152 net yards) matched those of FSU (140). FSUdefense registered three sacks, but the offense was a paltry 1-for-6 on third down conversions and was penalized five times for 45 yards.Once again, though, the Noles would come out after halftime and execute well. A seven-minute drive resulting in a touchdown took nearly all the wind out of the Cougars sails and swelled FSUlead to 20-10.The Seminole defense also came out in the third quarter and stepped up their game. They forced BYU to punt on its first two drives of the second half and allowed only 30 yards in the quarter. FSU would score another touchdown on its second drive thanks to a 31-yard scamper by Thompson and a 34-yard jump ball caught by Willie Haulstead. The second-half adjustments made by the Seminoles stifled the Cougars on both sides of the ball. FSU would add another five sacks (making the game total eight) and would only allow BYU to gain five yards in the final quarter. There is a group of underclassmen on this team who are clearly stepping to the forefront, as they are dominating the stat sheet nearly every Saturday.Though Jermaine Thomas started the game, the rushing totals were dominated by Chris Thompson (123 yards, one TD) and Ty Jones (95 yards, one TD). Ponder even chimed in to the tune of 50 yards and a touchdown on the ground.Bert Reed has emerged as the clear-cut No. 1 receiver, as Ponder identified him as his third down possession guy often. He led the team with nine catches and amassed 89 yards. Though their numbers werenas gaudy as Reeds, big men Willie Haulstead and Rodney Smith were targeted frequently throughout the game on long routes. On the other side of the ball, Xavier Rhodes, Lamarcus Joyner, and Nick Moody had excellent games in the secondary.Rhodes had a sack and an interception early in the game that really set the tone, Joyner was involved in numerous pass breakups, and Moody seemed to be doling out crushing hits all day like jello shots at a tailgate party.Overall, the defense just seemed to tackle better. Exceptional might be a better way to describe it. There weren't many broken tackles (if any), as Cougars were brought down upon immediate impact. If none of this was enough to bring a smile Miami Dolphins jersey
over any Nole boosterface, the D-line also stepped up in a big way.The defensive line accounted for five sacks and pressured the BYU quarterbacks all dayso much so that calm Cougar touch passes in the first half turned into hurried, early, inaccurate rifle shots in the second half.In a two-play sequence in the third quarter, playmaker Everette Dawkins broke a double team to bring a running back down in the backfield and then sacked the quarterback on the very next play. The linebackers did a nice job in run support and managed to hassle the quarterback as well. Brandon Jenkins had two sacks. The linebackers had trouble covering receivers and backs throughout the game, though. When the clock reached zero, BYU only had 10 points to speak of (all coming in the first half) and tallied 191 total yards, managing only 39 of them in the second half.Despite last weeksetback (itstill too painful to call it what it really was), this youngFSUteam is showing real promise. If the FSU--Miami game were to be played today, what would be the outcome? If the FSU--Miami game were to be played today, what would be the outcome?FSU wins big6.7%Miami would win11.8%FSU escapes with a narrow victory58.8%The game would be too close to predict22.7%Total votes: 119The running game looks deadly, especially off tackle. Receivers are making plays, both underneath coverage and vertically downfield. The offensive linewithout starting tackle Andrew Datkoblocked well and protected their passer all day.The big surprise was the effort of the defense. The sack total reminded Seminole fans of the glory days in the early '90s, when knocking quarterbacks out was expected. The question wasnif the Noles would knock a QB out of the game; it was how many. The tackling was superb and hasnbeen this good since those glory years. The lapses on defense were minor, and just like in Weeks 1 and 2, FSUD was stellar in the second half.Ithard to place an accurate value on Saturdayaccomplishment, largely because ithard to figure out how legitimate the opponent was. One thingfor Minnesota Vikings
certain: The Seminoles seem to get better and better each week. These young underclassmen are coming up huge each week, and thereno telling where they will be come October 9.The coaching staff and players arenlooking too far ahead, but as fans, critics, and observers, we are more than welcome to do so. That looming collision in South FL with hated rival Miami should have Seminole fans salivating.

18 Jan 11 Oregon vs. Arizona State: Ducks Need To Avoid This Trap

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesThe Oregon Ducks have been absolutely stunning over the last few weeks. They are leading the nation in scoring, they are second in rushing yards per game, and they are only allowing an average of four points per game. Most baseball teams would be happy with that average.Overall, very few things have not worked for Oregon. True, they have yet to play a truly tough opponent, and the only sign of adversity they have confronted was during the first quarter in Tennessee. But you can only be asked to play the games on your schedule, and Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
the Ducks could not have been more impressive so far.On the flip side, Arizona State had a similarly easy schedule in their first two weeks of the season, in fact playing the same Portland State team that Oregon just destroyed. But ASU was forced to face a true test of adversity, playing 11th-ranked Wisconsin in Madison last week. While the Sun Devils ultimately were beaten by the Badgers, they looked very impressive in the process.Arizona State is a very talented team, but the real key to this game has more to do with Oregon's focus. They must make sure they don't look past the Sun Devils in anticipation of their big showdown with Stanford the next week. The key to Arizona State is their fast-paced spread offense. They have a solid running game with a nice combination of thunder and lightning in Cameron Marshall and Deantre Lewis. But they rise and fall based on their veteran signal caller Steven Threet.Threet is poised, accurate, and a better athlete than he may appear to be. He runs the offense with confidence and almost pulled off a nifty comeback last week against Wisconsin. But Threet isn't mobile enough to give Oregon's linebackers too much trouble, and his arm isn't big enough to take advantage of the Ducks' cornerbacks, who are the closest thing to a weakness on the superb Oregon defense. The running game is solid, but it isn't better than Tennessee's, and we all saw how Oregon was able to adjust to the Volunteers. On the other side of the ball, ASU has a very good linebacker corps led by Vontaze Burfict. They are strong, but, most importantly, Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
they are fast. If the Sun Devils' defensive line can prevent the big guys from getting up field to open up holes, then linebackers can slow down the Ducks running game. However, the Oregon offensive line has been a handful to opponents. A big part of their success has been left tackle Darrion Weems. But according to Oregon Live Weems has missed practice all week and is questionable for this week's game. If Weems misses the game, the Ducks will need the right side of the offensive line to step up, and the tight ends will have to help open up holes. That being said, this Arizona State defense isn't a great deal different from the squad that Oregon blew out last year, and on paper this is a team that still is capable of crushing the Sun Devils.Darron Thomas has impressed in his first few games, and he should be able to give ASU's defenders fits. His athleticism should open up the door for his receivers to burn Arizona State's somewhat shaky defensive secondary.Overall, the key to this game will be special teams. Arizona State was able to mount a comeback against Wisconsin namely because of their ability to return kicks. So far Oregon has been extremely stout against returners, allowing only one return of 30 yards or more. There is no reason to believe that Oregon will have the same trouble with the Sun Devils' return game that Wisconsin had, since Oregon's defense is a lot deeper than the Badgers. But Arizona State showed some real explosiveness and I would be shocked if they were held in check. Look for either Kyle Middlebrooks for Omar Bolden to get a hold of another kick return and take it deep into Ducks territory.Oregon is definitely the favorite, but it will come down to how serious they take the Sun Devils. If they come out flat, ASU has the talent to make it interesting. But if Oregon gets out to a Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
quick lead, they have the type of running game that can hold that advantage. This will be a true mental test for the Ducks, and it could serve as a nice spring board to their showdown next week with Stanford.Look for Oregon to win this one, but ASU should make it interesting. Oregon is favored by 12 points; personally, I would take the under. This is a game the Ducks should be wary of although they ultimately will win by a touchdown.

15 Jan 11 St. Louis Rams "Lack of change puts league on notice"

On paper, the St. Louis Rams' offense looks primed to explode. With the addition of tight end Randy McMichael, wide receiver Drew Bennett, and versatile rookie running back Brian Leonard added to a youthful O-line that was able to gain valuable experience as last season wound down, the NFL's sixth-ranked offense can only increase its potency. Adding this sort of weaponry to star mainstays Marc Bulger, Steven Jackson, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt is akin to handing a blowtorch-toting arsonist a bag of bottle rockets. On paper, the Rams' defense is disturbinglyReebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
similar to last year's. The additions of linebacker Chris Draft, defensive end James Hall and rookie lineman Adam Carriker are the most notable names brought in during a seemingly unremarkable offseason on that side of the ball. To describe last year's defensive squad as underwhelming is an understatement comparable to saying that Paris Hilton has "loose" morals. On paper, however, the Rams appear to like what they see on both sides of the ball. The coaching staff has made no effort to acquire any "name" players on defense, opting to pass on players such as DTs Kris Jenkins and Sam Adams. Additionally, the acquisitions on offense, though not marquee players, are proven veteran talents just entering their prime. As a result, the offensive roster is now arguably the most talent laden in the league. So, what does all of this mean for Rams fans? It means you're either supremely confident in this year's club, bracing yourself for a rehash of last season's unrealized success, or your thoughts fall somewhere in the middle of the emotional spectrum.Scott Linehan has opted for the confident posture, explaining, "I feel so much better this time of this year than I did last year. I think we were still working trying to find some answers that weren't there yet. Now I think we have addressed those needs and now we have to go out and Reebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
prove it and do it on the field."Of course, a head coach has no option but to appear confident at this point in the offseason; he couldn't exactly proclaim, "I've really made a mess of things," even if he believed that were the case. However, Linehan appears genuinely intrigued by the performance of his younger players, praising the likes of rookie Carriker's mini-camp performance as well as former doghouse resident Claude Terrell in recent interviews. The fact that the Rams have only added complementary players rather than making wholesale changes is telling; it signals that Linehan believes that the core of the team is set and only needed a little fine tuning. The defensive line was a problem, so potential starters Hall and Carriker were added. Dante Hall was added to the perennially problematic special teams, and although his electrifying days may be behind him, he need only show up to bolster the Rams' return game immeasurably. Outside of these changes, the Rams will basically field the same team as last season, the only difference being they will have a year in the system under their belts.Perhaps there is a method to Linehan's madness, unlike his predecessor, who seemed to frequently have a madness to his method. Perhaps Linehan's confidence is justified after all. When one looks at the awesome array of weaponry on offense and the potential of the young players on defense, it is hard not to share the head coach's confidence. With a roster replete with proven veterans and young potential, the Rams appear at least the equal of any NFL team in terms of Reebok Chicago Bears #6 Jay Cutler Realtree camo Jersey
talent. They appear to have all the tools required to build upon last year's season-ending three-game winning streak. They now possess the talent and ability to push to the next level and into the playoffs. On paper.**You can e-mail Steve Reynolds at sreynoldsRealFootball365.com: Where there's never an offseason for St. Louis Rams football! 14 Jan 11 Seattle Seahawks and Bobby Engram "Offense catches another bad break"

The Seahawks just can’t catch a break on offense these days. Or, to twist the meaning of that phrase, they’re catching too many breaks. Already thin at receiver, the Seahawks now are down to one veteran wideout after Bobby Engram suffered a cracked shoulder bone against Minnesota last weekend. The Hawks already were poised to enter the season with three or four young, inexperienced receivers behind Engram and sixth-year man Nate Burleson. Now Burleson becomes quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s default No. 1 receiver, with a host of youngsters vying for spots Reebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
on the roster. Just call this band of receivers “Nate and the Nobodies.” That’s quite a turnaround from just two years ago, when the Seahawks had five quality wideouts in their stable. But they released the injury-prone and attitude-challenged Darrell Jackson last offseason, lost Deion Branch to a torn ACL late in 2007 and let the injury-prone D.J. Hackett go this year. Now the biggest question becomes: Will the Seahawks carry both Branch and Engram on the active roster or will they put one of them on the PUP, which would open a roster spot while sidelining the injured player for the first six games? The answer will determine how many of the young guys make the final roster. Coach Mike Holmgren has said he expects Branch to be ready for the season opener, but it’s hard to imagine the 29-year-old being full strength just nine months after tearing up his knee (in the playoff loss to Green Bay in January). That means Burleson will lead the way for the first few games and the Seahawks will need a couple of the young guys to emerge as dependable players, if not playmakers. Ben Obomanu is the most experienced of the bunch, which doesn’t say much. He played in 13 games last season and caught 12 passes for 180 yards. He teased of his potential with a few big plays, but he often befuddled Hasselbeck and Holmgren with his multitude of mistakes.Courtney Taylor showed some ability when he was healthy, but that was not very often. And his injury issues have persisted this summer, which has to make the Hawks wonder whether he will ever be healthy enough to contribute.Logan Payne, who languished on the practice squad last season, is also in the mix. He runs good routes and has the best hands of the young receivers. Jordan Kent is the most promising of all, with the height (6-foot-4) and Reebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
speed to be a game-breaker. He has made definite strides after spending last season on the practice squad, but his inexperience is a big drawback. Rookie Michael Bumpus has shown he might well be in the mix, too, particularly after drawing specific praise from Holmgren and showing well in the first preseason game. This is the scenario the Seahawks created for themselves when they opted not to re-sign Hackett, who instead went to Carolina. And it’s the situation they surely had hoped to avoid once Engram did in fact report for camp. As it turns out, Engram probably shouldn’t have reported. But he played the good soldier, despite his unhappiness with his contract situation, and now he has paid the price as he will miss at least the first three games.Engram had argued that he deserves to be paid better than he currently is in light of the fact that he had a career year in 2007. As injuries depleted the Seahawks’ receiving corps, Engram bounced back from a thyroid condition that had cost him most of the 2006 season and he proceeded to set the team record with 94 receptions in '07. Obviously Engram was one of their top three offensive players last season (behind Hasselbeck and left tackle Walter Jones), but the Seahawks now look smart for holding the line and not giving a big contract to a 35-year-old.But they’re also going to miss that old man for the first month or so of the season. Burleson will probably get double-teamed a lot, which means Obomanu, Taylor, Payne or Kent – whoever makes the final cut – needs to catch on quick. The impact of Engram’s injury will be lessened by the fact that the Seahawks plan to spread the ball around. Tight ends John Carlson and Jeb Putzier offer good options for Hasselbeck, and the running backs will be more involved than they have been in recent years. The wild card is backup QB Seneca Wallace, whom Holmgren has wanted to use as a receiver forever but has not because he didn’t want to risk injury to his No. 2 passer. Although the Seahawks suddenly seem in dire need of reinforcements at receiver, Reebok Chicago Bears #6 Jay Cutler Realtree camo Jersey
don’t expect Wallace to start lining up at flanker. In fact, with Hasselbeck nursing a sore back, Wallace surely will not see any time at receiver in the preseason. Now, with Engram out, the spotlight will burn even brighter on those young guys, and it will be up to Burleson to lead the way and Hasselbeck to spread the ball around. If the Hawks can do that – and not catch any more bad breaks – they’ll be able to survive without Engram.Fantasy Playbook: An entirely new kind of fantasy game!

13 Jan 11 NBA Turning To Tom Brady Rules

Al Bello/Getty ImagesDon get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. I am not one of those fans from New England who was born in Texasand has a different team from every region of North America. Brady is an outstanding quarterback (who has bad games or terrible games.or embarrassing games). The thing with Brady is that ever since his knee injury, any finger that touched the guy this past year was a roughing the passer penalty. Nudge him after the play? Personal Foul. Go flying past his knees, without touching them? Personal Foul.I won act for a minute like this is only the case for Brady, however, I feel it is more of a case for him because he is the Golden Boy of the NFL and they want to do everything to protect him, just like they would Peyton Manning. They Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
are the faces of the NFL. Every defensive player has this .2 second thought process that runs through their brain JUST before they are about to hit the QB. It starts with, How the heck can I take this guy down without getting a flag? The rules are fairly simple Can lead with your feet Can Lead with your Head. Can lead with your shoulder Cant touch his helmet Cant go below the waist.. That about sums it up. How in the world, as a defensive player, are you supposed to take down this QB? My suggestion: Grab a pillow and a blanket, lay him down gently, and tuck him in....Read how this compares to the NBA.

12 Jan 11 KG Is The Greatest Power Forward In NBA History

Elsa/Getty ImagesAt the start of the year something strange happened to the Internetlist mania. When browsing the web you would be forgiven for thinking that some quota legislation was passed requiring every website to create a list, these often manifested with "Best Of" lists. Best of the year, century, millennium, or all time it didn't matter, the Internet went a tad bit crazy. As a NBA fanatic my browsing habits often led me to basketball sites, lists, and all, which turned out to annoy me more than a little bit. Many "best of the decade" and "best of all time" lists Green Bay Packers jersey
were made which, to me at least, made a mistake. They refused to acknowledge Kevin Garnett as the best power forward in the history of the NBA.Obviously these lists are subjective and changeable depending on the day but one ranking seemed to be apparent in almost all the lists, perhaps suggesting a common view. They all ranked Tim Duncan as the best power forward in the game.I'm not a fool; I wouldn't be unhappy if Tim Duncan was on my team, he is a legend, the archetype of the position but not, in my opinion, the best. When any kind of list is made, many factors are taken into account, the stats, the intangibles, and the always important, number of rings.I'm going to say itchampionships are overrated in these lists. Not because of their intrinsic value but because of the vast amount of luck involved. Consider if the Spurs drafted KG instead of TD, would history be vastly different? KG would have linked up with 'The Admiral' and there would still have been the 'Twin Towers". But what of the Timberwolves?Would there have been the playoff Houston Texans jersey
appearances, would Timmy have been "The Franchise"? I don't think so. KG was the heart of that team, he dragged them up by the sheer force of his will. As good as TD is, he isn't KG. Consider thisKG is the only player in NBA history to average 20/10/5 for SIX consecutive seasons, he averaged 20/10/4 for NINE. He did that whilst also being the face of the team, the best player, the go to guy, the lock down defender, and he did that without any college experience. As stated earlier I'm no fool, I know how good TD is. My issue is he is ranked often because of other factorsthe fairytale championship with David Robinson, every ones love of Pop and the fact he's a nice guy. KG is often refused that benefit of the doubt, criticised for not winning a ring with one of the worst franchises in the league. Ignoring the Indianapolis Colts jersey
fact they were relevant at all, a miracle in itself. The argument has merit even without considering the comeback of the Boston Celtics, which provided a glimpse of what KG could have achieved if he had the luck that Timmy had.TD is the second best power forward in the game.

12 Jan 11 NBA Daily Dribbles: Sam and Iggy Gettin' Jiggy in Big D

SATIRE ?What I’m Reading? Andre Iguoudala is now the hot topic among the ongoing trade rumors. Which teams want him and his $56 million remaining after this year?? Miami is starting to get involved in the Stoudemire talks. If Pat Riley is able to reel him in from Phoenix, will it be enough to push them to the top of the East?? Antawn Jamison isn’t about to be a Cav and Caron Butler wants out of Washington but his play of late isn’t exactly making teams salivate.? The Nets have informed teams that they’re in the market for a big name via trade. In addition, the Nets first had to reassure other NBA front offices that this announcement was, in fact, not a joke.? Kirk Hinrich could end up in purple and gold before we know it, but it still is not imminent. What I Think About It? It’s very possible that Philly’s backseat AI could be shipped out of the City of Brotherly Love shortly, despite the long-term financial baggage that any team would inherit along with him. Luckily, his play nearly merits his boat of a contract so any team that would be acquiring him would be vying for a playoff push and would see the expense as necessary. Dallas is doing their best to work out a deal that would involve a Josh Howard for Iguodala switch with a little Haitian Sensation (Sam Dalembert) thrown in. Big D is the most likely destination for either player to end up, but Houston and Cleveland are also still in play, despite the Cavs’ need for a power forward.? While Jermaine O’Neal hasn’t been “terrible” this year, which in all honesty is because of the low expectations set for him, he’s nowhere near his Pacer-days of averaging double-double figures including 20+ ppg. Any deal that Miami could make to get Stoudemire into South Beach needs to immediately be done, especially if it includes O’Neal. Even if it’s just until June, five-plus months of Amar’e are approximately 34,534,677 times better than five-plus months of Jermaine. If this deal went through, it would not affect Miami’s chances at signing Dwyane Wade from a financial standpoint, because Amar’e is likely going to opt out of his contract at the end of the season. Win-win.? I have to feel for the Wizards’ players, especially for Jamison and Butler. This was supposed to be their year where it all came together and everyone stayed healthy and they finally made a run. It just didn’t happen thanks to two idiots. Granted, things weren’t going well prior to the Arenas incident, but it put the icing on the cake. While Jamison would never publicly say that he’d like to leave because he isn’t the type to do so, he’s still dropping hints. "That's the only thing I think about is winning a title," Jamison said. "That's the reason why I'm still playing. That's the reason why I'm still going hard. It's the only thing that drives me and pushes me, so it's the only thing left I have to accomplish, and I'm going to continue to do that." Well, since he won’t be winning one in Washington, it’s easy to assume that he’d like to be elsewhere. The Cavs are clearly the easy fit, but with Washington seeing Cleveland as a rival, it’s unlikely that he’ll actually end up there. For Butler, there are plenty of teams that would be willing to take him on, despite his decreased numbers. He hasn’t exactly been as “regal” in this situation as Jamison has, but he’s frustrated. And for good reason. I fully expect both players to be out of Washington soon enough.? The Nets do actually have plenty to offer other teams, believe it or not. They have young, talented (albeit raw) players, expiring contracts and plenty of draft picks over the next few years, including two first-rounders and what is going to be the first pick of the second round. So as awkward as it sounds, consider the Nets in the running for some of the bigger names as we near the deadline. They’re going to be desperately trying to make their franchise as desirable a spot as New Jersey can be, which is no small feat. If they can polish their image now, the hope is that some of the more sought-after free agents will consider NJ as a destination for 2010 and beyond.? The current proposed deal between the Bulls and Lakers features Hinrich going to LA for Sasha Vujacic and Adam Morrison, who by all accounts should not even still be in the league. If this trade was to go through, it would be legendary. An all-awkward-white-guy trade? Unreal! It’d be the top storyline of the 2010 NBA season. Hands down. Not Gilbert, not T-Mac, not AI, not the free agent class of the summer, nope. None of them come close to what this deal would mean for the game. Clearly, I’m ready for the weekend. And give him some eyebrows, too."-Charles Barkley on Hawks coach Mike Woodson?Games to Watch this WeekendFriday: Denver Nuggets at Oklahoma City ThunderSaturday: Atlanta Hawks at Orlando MagicSunday: LA Lakers at Boston Celtics?‘Til Monday...PDFollow Pat DeCola on Twitter!

10 Jan 11 Lebron to NY? Fans Beware

Many New York Knicks fans are hoping, praying, and worshiping the NBA gods that Lebron James is delivered to them this off-season. They have the money; Donnie Walsh has spent the last two years clearing cap space, and the Mecca of basketball, Madison SquareGarden. With this past trading deadline Walsh was able to clear another $9.5million off the books by moving Jared Jeffries and Jordan Hill for Tracy McGrady. Now they have enough room to offer two max contracts this off-season. Who will make their way to NYC?Having Tracy McGrady there will make Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
it moreenticing to free agents, but besides him they have Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry, Toney Douglas, and Danilo Gallinari under contract for next year. The real key for any progress hinges on the ability to keep David Lee. Do the Knicks fans remember a situation similar to this in '96. The Knicks had cleared about $20 million in cap room to woo none other than the last great player to wear 23, Michael Jordan. The Knicks managed to clear nearly $20 million in cap space while retaining the services of Patrick Ewing, Charles Oakley and John Starks. The addition of Jordan would have vaulted New York back into championship contention. However the Bulls retained Jordan's services with aone year $30.14 million dollar offer, which gave the Bulls another ring and the Knicks on the outside looking in. The Knicks hope that this off-season will end with them looking like the Celtics after they acquired Garnett and Ray Allen. Two big superstars and surround them with some young talent and some veterans looking for a shot at a title. Lebron James and a combination of either Amar'e, Wade, Bosh, or Boozer would help most Knick fans erase the past seasons of disappointment. However if the Cavs win a title or Lebron feels that they are a season away he will stay, and this could lead to other free agents shying away San Diego Chargers jersey
from the Big Apple. Knick fans should accept the fact that they may end up with Joe Johnson andDavid Lee. Setting expectations too high, such as the message boards that declare "James and Wade Welcome to NY", will lead to greater disappointment. See Chicago Bulls in 2000 when they missed out on Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, and Tracy McGrady.Even getting twotop free agents doesn't guarantee success. See Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady in Orlando.Knick fans do deserve a player that that can bring New York back up to the top but they may end up on the outside looking in again.

9 Jan 11 The 30-Day Waiver Rule: An NBA Loophole That Must Be Closed

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesWith news that Zydrunas Ilgauskas was bought out and will return to the Cavs after waiting 30 days, the issue of the rule allowing players to return to their last teams after being waived came to the forefront. While the NBA determined that there was no proof of a previous agreement between the Wizards and Cavaliers that the Wizards would waive Ilgauskas, it is likely that there was a wink and a nod that accompanied the deal that brought Antawn Jamison to the Cavaliers. So why is this rule allowing Ilgauskas to go back to theReebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
Cavaliers unfair? If a trade works for both teams and one team thinks it is in their best interest to buy their player out, why not allow them to do so?The fact is that the rule contradicts the salary cap rules that attempt to stop completely unfair trades and "have" and "have-not" teams from appearing. All other rules in the CBA aim to level the playing field but this rule does quite the opposite. Some would argue that all teams should have freedom to make any type of trade, but the fact is that without rules, teams like the Knicks, the Lakers, and the Celtics would be even more dominant than the best teams already are. There are restrictions on the amount of cash allowed to be included in any transaction for this exact reason. Without that, the richest teams could pay a premium and buy top lottery picks to replenish their team. Why not allow the Lakers to buy Derrick Rose from the Bulls for say $20 million? While the trade of Ilgauskas is not as one-sided as buying the top pick in the draft, trading the last pick of the first round for Antawn Jamison clearly is a completely unfair trade. These rules are designed to protect predatory teams from preying on other desperate teams. The Wizards are the epitome of a desperate team. Their star point guard is going to spend more time in jail this offseason than playing basketball, their Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
hopes for a deep playoff run were destroyed two weeks into the season, and they're in the middle of an ownership change. The Cavaliers took advantage of this desperation, giving up basically nothing of any value except giving their backup center a month of vacation to rest his legs, and getting a potential All-Star forward in the process. Finally, why should Ilgauskas be allowed to return to the Cavaliers when there is a rule preventing a team from reacquiring a player they traded away in another trade? Why should they be allowed to resign someone after they traded him away but not reacquire him in a trade? The fact is that the Cavaliers did nothing wrong in their acquisition of Antawn Jamison and probable reacquisition of Zydrunas Ilgauskas, they merely used the rules to their advantage.Still, it is frustrating to see the ridiculousness in some of the salary cap rules. The rules attempt to protect desperate teams from aggressive, financially well-off teams, yet contradict themselves with this rule. From allowing a team to send a player along with cash to cover his salary to a Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
team under the cap in order to get under the luxury tax to this absurd rule, it is clear that the salary cap rules are in need of reform. When the new collective bargaining agreement is reached, it will be important to rid the salary cap restrictions of these arbitrary rules to create a more fair balance of talent in the league.

8 Jan 11 LeBron James: How He Closes

Kobe Bryant has been appropriately lauded for his phenomenal game winning shots. That's as it should be. But tonight, LeBron James demonstrated against the Indiana Pacers that he has his own way of closing games. With four minutes, seven seconds left in the game, the Pacers had closed to within one (88-87).At that point, LeBron simply asserted his tremendous physical abilities to impact the game and put it away for Cleveland, making spectacular plays at both ends of the floor, and generating an almost unbelievable level of energy after 44 minutes ofCincinnati Bengals jersey
basketball. It started with Brandon Rush driving past LeBron towards the right baseline. Like he had twice against Paul Pierce on Sunday, LeBron followed the driver and then with tremendous speed and elevation blocked the attempted layup against the backboard, sending it back to be recovered by Anderson Varejao.Rush had been looking to give the Pacers the lead. Not this time; not in this house. At the other end, LeBron dished to Varejao for a quick bucket. Cavs by three with 4:01 left. Next Anderson and LeBron sort of collectively stole a lob pass to Hibbert, and then at the other end Varejao threw a lob to LeBron who exploded into the air, head at rim level, and rammed in a backboard shaking reverse dunk. (For a big man, Varejao is quite good at those lob passes.)Cavs by five with 3:34 left. After Mo Williams nailed a technical free throw to put the Cavs up by six, LeBron took the ball in the post on the right side and wheeled into the lane to hit a beautiful fall away. Cavs by eight with 2:32 left.Brandon Rush hit a three for the Pacers to bring it back to five, then LeBron missed a pretty bad fade away from the right corner at the other end. Rush got the ball and was pushing it up the left sideline. However, after missing the fade away, LeBron just kept running, circled around, caught up to Rush from behind, Cleveland Browns jersey
and literally just took over Rush's dribble, circled back beneath the Pacers' basket, pushed the ball up on the other end into the teeth of the Pacers defense, and dropped a one-hand overhead pass to Jamison for an easy layup. In that sequence, LeBron ran virtually from one end line to the other and back again, passing Pacers players in bunches in both directions, in order to get the Cavs another score.Cavs back up by seven (97-90) with 1:42 left. After A.J. Price made a three for the Pacers to bring it back to four, Cleveland used a timeout, then ran a play for LeBron. Mo Williams hit him on a cut coming down from the foul line towards the left baseline, and catching the pass, he elevated above the Pacers defenders, twisted towards the basket with strength, and banked it home with a soft touch.Cavs by six (99-93) with 1:07 to go.Ten seconds later, LeBron literally punctured the air out of the Pacers' hopes.A.J. Price drove to the basket, and LeBron came from behind with help, leaped into the air and got elevated above the ball on Price's shot, and then hit it with what looked and sounded like a volleyball spike.Absolutely brutal.Austin Carr said LeBron had knocked the "Spalding" off the ball. The force of the block was simply breathtaking. The final 47 seconds played out inconsequentially, Indiana adding a point on a free throw to make the final score 99-94. There would be no last second, buzzer-beating, game-winning shot, a la Kobe Bryant, because LeBron had already imposed himself on the game and closed it out between the four and one minute marks. There is no other player in the game who could have done what LeBron did in those three minutes. With ferocious blocked shots, steals after running the floor with lightning speed, deft assists, and unstoppable short jump shots, LebronDallas Cowboys jersey
closed the game out authoritatively.LeBron has his own way of closing games, and it involves a lot more than buzzer beaters (though he's certainly hit those in his time as a player). The Pacers tonight are probably feeling like they got run over by a mack truck in those last few minutes. They did.(And by the way, one night after he had a triple double against Detroit, LeBron finished against Indiana with 32, 9, and 9. Another night's work.)

30 Dec 10 Heat-Pacers: Dwyane Wade's 43 Carry Miami Over Indiana For Seventh Straight Win

Dwyane Wade poured in 43 points and the surging Miami Heat prevailed over the Indiana Pacers in overtime Friday night, 105-96, for their seventh straight victory. The Heat completed a season sweep over the Pacers (4-0) for the first time in the franchise's 22-year history.More importantly, Miami moved into the fifth seed after the Milwaukee Bucks were defeated by Charlotte last night. They now hold a slim half-game lead over the Bucks with just six games remaining in the regular season. The Heat have been on fire lately, winning 13 out ofReebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
their last 16 games, which has helped them climb up the standings in the last month, rising from the eighth seed all the way to the fifth seed. With Miami winning its first three contests against the Pacers this season, they knew their opponents would be showing up with a vengeance. Unlike the first three games, this one was a dog fight that saw a back-and-forth fourth quarter head into overtime. The Pacers had huge runs in both the third and fourth quarters, but like usual, Wade was there to save the Heat. With Miami trailing by four late in the third, Wade scored 14 of the Heat's last 16 points to regain the lead. Then late in the fourth, Wade had a crucial assist and hit a free throw to give his team an 89-87 lead. However, Indiana was able to tie the game and send the game into overtime, Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers 43 Troy Polamalu Realtree camo Jersey
where Wade completely took over. The All-Star guard torched the Pacer defense for eight points in the extra period, including back-to-back three-pointers that ensured the victory for the Heat. Those two threes were a dagger at the end, Pacers coach Jim OBrien said. Wade showed us why he one of the top three players in the league. He a superb clutch basketball player that single-handedly won the game for them.Overall, Wade finished with 43 points, one point shy of his season high, on 14-for-22 shooting, to go along with nine rebounds, six assists, three steals, and three blocks. In addition, he went 13-for-17 from the free throw line and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. His stellar play propelled Miami to their fifth straight road win.The Heat are now 20-18 away from home, which shatters their 15-26 road record from last season.Sophomore Michael Beasley chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. Dorell Wright contributed 11 points and seven boards, while Mario Chalmers had 10 points off the bench. Udonis Haslem also had 9 points and 11 boards off the bench. The Pacers were led by a strong effort from Troy Murphy, who posted 29 points and 15 rebounds. Murphy had a double-double at halftime with 20 points and 11 boards.Danny Granger also contributed big with 25 points, while Solomon Jones added 13 and Brandon rush had 10 points.Miami was able to match every run that the Pacers offered and they simply out-hustled their opponents. The Heat held the rebounding edge 52-38 and limited Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
Indiana to 37 percent shooting from the field.Miami will look to continue its winning streak tonight when they travel to Minnesota to face the lowly Timber Wolves. With just six games left, the Heat will need to continue its winning ways in order to hold on to their slim lead of the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference.

29 Dec 10 2010 NBA Playoffs: Chicago Bulls Could Give Cleveland Cavaliers Trouble

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesThe Chicago Bulls secured the eighth and final playoff spot and a first round matchup with the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers. History has shown the Bulls have next to no shot at upsetting the Cavs and moving on to the second round, however, that does not mean the Bulls will be an easy out.If the Bulls proved anything in last years playoffs against the then defending champion Boston Celtics it's that they will fight until the end. That same fight was evident in securing their playoff spot. After suffering a rash of Tennessee Titans jersey
injuries at the worst possible time the Bulls went through a 10-game losing streak that dropped them out of the playoffs. When the Bulls regained a full lineup they went on to finish the season 10-4. It took until the final day of the regular season for them to get into the playoffs. Now that they are in they should provide a tough series for the Cavs. The two teams split the season series 2-2, but the Cavs played the final game without LeBron James. The Bulls did win an early season game in Cleveland which should provide confidence in knowing they can beat the Cavs at full strength in Cleveland.Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah will be at the forefront for the Bulls. Both players have gone through injuries throughout the season but are now healthy and playing well. The X-factor for the Bulls could beWashington Redskins jersey
Kirk Hinrich. He has suffered through a poor shooting season, but over the last five games his shooting has started to climb towards 50 percent. If Hinrich can provide some outside scoring it will open things up on the inside for Noah and rookie Taj Gibson.Luol Deng will have the tough task of guarding James and it certaintly will take a team effort to try and slow down the King. However, Deng has shown flashes of being able to slow down James in the past. Forcing James into a jump shooter will be a key to the Bulls defense as he is at his most dangerous when he is driving to the basket and getting to the free throw line. The Bulls will need a lot of help from their bench. Brad Miller will provide a versatile scorer and should be able to stretch the Cavs' big men away from the basket and open things up for Rose attacking the basket. Flip Murray will need to come in and provide some scoring punch so Rose will not have to carry the load for the entire series. The Bulls have proved over the course of the season that no matter what type of Reebok Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Realtree camo Jersey
adversity is thrown their way they are able to overcome it and win and get into the playoffs. It will take that type of character to make a run at the Cavs and the experience of last years postseason will no doubt help them as well. They will have a tough task in round one but they have shown they have no fear and will stand up to the Cavaliers.

28 Dec 10 For New Jersey Nets, It's All about Forgetting This Year

Jim McIsaac/Getty ImagesThe 2009-2010 season for the New Jersey Nets can be described as an unmitigated disaster. The Nets spent the vast majority of the very long NBA season fretting that they would win less games than the infamous 1972-73 Philadelphia '76rs, a team that only won nine games Seattle Seahawks jersey
behind Fred Carter 20 points per game.It a sad state of affairs when winning 12 games is a cause for celebration, but that exactly the situation facing the Nets organization. Now, on to the future, and hopefully, rebuilding.New Jersey wants to forget this season ever happened, but that means hard decisions about the future.Number one on the rebuilding list will be whether interim coach and GM Kiki Vandeweghe will stay on with the franchise. Vandeweghe is in the final year of his contract, and putting together one of the worst teams in NBA history is not much of a reason to keep someone on.But, honestly, most GMs in the NBA are lousy, and coaching is mostly non-existent.So, what, if anything, can the Nets do to keep from repeating this season? The Nets need to be careful not to try a complete overhaul of the roster, but instead look for significant changes. In a league made of of teams with interchangeable players, there are some starting points for the Nets.Rookie Terrence Williams has provided a bit of hope, although his 8.4 PPG St. Louis Rams jersey
and 4.5 RPG are hardly enough to carry a team. To be clear, Williams only started nine games this season, and may have been hampered by foot injuries as the season wore on. Still, his efforts are enough to consider him as a future contributor.Brook Lopez and Devin Harris are the leading scorers on a team that lacks a lot of offense. So where do the Nets look for more punch? The most obvious choice is that if they get the top lottery pick, they should take John Wall. If they don get the top pick, they might do well to land a wing player like Wes Johnson or Evan Turner. If they drop too far, they might have to settle on the best available players or grab players who can play the three and four like Al-Farouq Aminu or Patrick Patterson, even though there may be more highly rated pure bigs available. It all depends on where the Nets decide they want improvement. The Nets already have Lopez in the paint. Do they want to help him out by creating more scoring from the wing or add depth in the paint? Drafting Eric Monroe, DeMarcus Cousins, or Derrick Favors might not mean a significant boost to offense, just more depth at the post.In the second round, it important to grab whoever is the best available player. That means they could end up with someone like Tennessee Titans jersey
Willie Warren, Greivis Vasquez, or possible even Eric Bledsoe if he falls out of the first round. One thing is certain, any player drafted by the Netsregardless of positionhas a solid shot at making the team.

27 Dec 10 How the Orlando Magic Can Come Back and Win Eastern Conference Title

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesDespite being down 2-0 to Boston in their Eastern Conference Final series, the Orlando Magic are still very much alive. Game two was a close one and a solid improvement from the poor play of game one. One thing is for sure, the Magic aren't going to go down without a fight. Minnesota Vikings
They have the skill, they have the determination, and they have the depth to pull off a comeback in this series, and no one should count them out.Raptors fans such as myself know the pain that Orlando felt when shooting guard Vince Carter missed BOTH free throws with less than a minute on the clock, late in the fourth quarter. Carter's inability to step it up in the clutch is one of the main reasons the Magic didn't pick up the W.Orlando was with the Celtics all game: in the paint, on outside shooting, and they kept it close throughout. However, when the game was on the line, Carter couldn't finish. Wow, that sounds familiar. So, VC screwed up. The Magic aren't going to cry about it, and neither should their fans. I can still hate on Carter about his terrible departure from Toronto, but Orlando as a team cannot be blamed for nervous, late-game foul shooting. They were in the game from start to finish, and that's what is important. The Magic are still very much in this series. They lost game one by four points and game two by three, New England Patriots jersey
numbers that hardly reflect them not being able to come back in the series. Orlando knows they can beat Boston, as they have before, and come Saturday, things might be very different for the two teams. They have been doubted all along: playing bad teams in the playoffs, no talent beyond Howard and Nelson...and so on. The fact of the matter is, that the Magic are doing a hell of a lot better against the Celtics than the original Eastern favorites, the Cavs. When Cleveland was up 2-1 on the Celtics in the second round, everyone had written Boston off. Then the Celtics came back to win the next three games by an average score of 17 points.Cleveland was thought to be the number one team in the East to make it all the way, and they just couldn't cut it. Orlando, on the other hand, is playing toe to toeNew Orleans Saints jersey
with the Celtics and keeping it close. Being down 2-0 could be an insurmountable feat for some teams but not the Magic.Look for Orlando to come out strong in game three and not let this one get away from them. The Magic are for real, whether you believe in them or not.

26 Dec 10 Steve Nash: The Busted Face Of Basketball

Jeff Gross/Getty ImagesIve always been a Steve Nash hater. Let just get that out there.Ive always thought that he a wormy, saccharine Canadian; a player whose abilities on the court are blown out of proportion by his statistics on paper. He the high school quarterback that scores the hot cheerleader, heads the class council, gets straight A, and petitions for more soda machines on campus. He is the kid who does more community service than the amount required for graduation. I mean, who does that!?We get it, Steve. Youre nice. Youre a do-gooder, Baltimore Ravens jersey
and youve won over the masses with your G-rated Disney pizazz. Just stop the act already. If you were to ask me, he didn deserve those MVPs. He got them because he was small, white, and did everything right. He answered questions politely, and smiled for the camera. He visited hospitals and painted houses. But his play didn justify the accolades, the fanfare, or the adoration. He has won nothing, accomplished nothing, proven nothing.I would have said he played us all for fools. And you know what? I would have been dead wrong. Because even though he playing against the Lakersmy LakersI keep finding myself rooting for Steven John Nash.***It kills me to say this, but Nash has revolutionized the game of basketball. His effect cannot be seen in a single game (though I guarantee you, like last night Game 5 thriller, he will make any game entertaining), nor can his effect on the basketball culture be quantifiably measured. This is true within Phoenix, Dallas, Santa Clara, Canada, and all throughout the NBA-watching globe. Just ask around. This wormy, saccharine Canadian has become an ambassador. Our ambassador. And, though it has taken me a while to come around on this fact, it is a privilege to have this class council president as our diplomat to the basketball-watching legions. His methods are highly successful, tremendously watchable, and brilliant to behold. May the Coke machines abound.First, let me break down what Nash brings to the court. In this, his 13th season, when his body should Buffalo Bills jersey
be/has been breaking down for at least five years, he is enjoying one of his finest seasons of all-time. (No small feat for a prior back-to-back MVP winner.) He averaged 16 points and 11 assists a game this year, 17.5 and 10 in the playoffs. He led his team to the Western Conference Finals when no one had them out of the first round. He re-activated Amare Stoudamire (not to mention the whole city of Phoenix), and in the biggest game of the year he hit big shot after big shot even as his coach was puking on the sidelines. True story. And I realize it is a pity that we have never seen what he can do in the Finals.True, he can beat players with his speed, provide lock-down defense, elevate, or play for over 35 minutes a game. But he never really could in the first place, could he? When he is on the court, he hides his every shortcoming in a way that it only rarely becomes apparent.I mean, let be honest. Every single player in the NBA yes, even Earl Boikins could post up Steve Nash if they were alone in a gym together. But it doesn happen. Why? Because Steve sees the play coming, switches off, and never gives them the opportunity.Steve maximizes his strengths at the offensive end to make up for his defense. If he needs to get by his defender, he goes into a succession of stutter-steps and hesitations, dipping his shoulder only when he has the man completely off-balance. If the defense switches, he lures the big men out to the 15-18 foot range, and either lofts a high shot over him (that he makes with great regularity) or burns by him for an unorthodox - yet thoroughly practiced - layup. For the opponent, it maddening. It like trying to share a sleeping bag with your sister - it should be easy, but you just can get in the right position. On drives, Nash gets behind the hoop - much like a hockey player and looks for cutters at angles the defense isn accustomed to. If the defenders stay at home on their players, it makes for an easy and uncontested layup. But if they switch off, they have to turn their back on Carolina Panthers jersey
Stoudamire or Grant Hill. And that never a smart idea.It brilliant basketball play, really. Like in fencing, he realizes that he is in power when he has the ball in attack mode. He makes the choices, dictating every move that the defense makes, and countering appropriately.Im beginning to realize Ive never seen a player like him.Steve Nash is proof that you don have to be able touch the top of the backboard in order to play in this league. He embodies the natural evolution of basketball; the game where a keen eye and smart thinking can make up for a lack of athletic talent. Now, Ill root for the Lakers until Im purple and gold in the face. But for basketball fans, Steve Nash is our savior. He is the hope of the slow, ground-ridden masses. And that quite an accomplishment, isn it?

25 Dec 10 Blake Griffin, The Great: Scary Dunks and Respect For a ROY-In-Waiting

Harry How/Getty ImagesLike a scary metamorphosis of Abdul Jabbar vaunted Skyhook, only a small handful of today players have the sheer strength, grace and leaping ability to literally throw the ball down at the hoop;and, make it look convincing. He who sits on the throne currently is Dwight Howard, Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
the 2008 NBA Slam Dunk Champ, whose exploits are in full-blown rotation in fan minds and this last decade collective dunk-highlight conscious. Blake Griffin is now primed to take that seat. After a 44 and 15 explosion versus the Knicks on Nov. 20th, including two dunk-of-the-year patents that sucked the air out of the arena, and an anomaly-crushing 35, 14 and 7 performance eight days later, Griffin is giving fans, staff and himself a long-awaited and exhilarating take-off. While his on-court, and above-court, presence is grabbing attention, it his championship attitude that bringing him respect around the L. Just check out his gutsy, standout play versus the then 11-1 Hornets on Nov. 23rd. With the losing-est team in professional sports facing a 1-14 start, and more dubious achievements, Griffin played like a veteran, spear-heading a late Clippers run and eventual 99-95 W, while protecting the rock with only two turnovers. Compared to other rookies, most notably John Wall;who leads the league with over four turnovers a game;the often-with-the-ball-in-his-hands Griffin has two-and-a-half turnovers per game are relatively modest yet noteworthy achievement. Also, considering the loss of top point guard Baron Davis and man-in-the-middle Chris Kaman absence, the ball has been seeing Griffin hands that much more. But besides his sure hands, perhaps the stat has more to do with just how imposing he is with the rock in his claws. I mean just look at Amare Stoudemire on-the-line expression and nod of Reebok Minnesota Vikings #69 Jared Allen Realtree camo Jersey
approval toward Griffin during the Knicks meeting where the now infamous Superman-slam occurred. Here Stoudemire, who before his sophomore knee injury was a monster like Griffin, a complete gravity-be-damned dunking behemoth who was more than capable of the same vicious throw-down Griffin planted in 71 Timofey Mosgov hapless grill;and he giving in-game recognition. Respect earned. Griffin dropping close to 21 and 11 per night;close to his senior year college stats ;and that puts him in the upper echelons of power forward/center production in the League. Names like Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Carlos Boozer come to mind, but Mr. Griffin puts it together like Doctor Dunkenstein-meets-the-Mailman. His back-to-the-basket skills aren too shabby either, with spin moves and step-backs that bring to mind why college is a necessary experience to polish a young pro game. At 610", Griffin handling skills are considerable. Check out his near coast-to-coast stuffs in the Knicks and Pistons games respectively, and then see his patience on the block, not forcing a play, but creating space and making the play. Also, Griffin in-air agility brings to mind a young Mamba slam over the Sixers eight years back, where he contorted way back to grab a Brian Shaw oop. Much like Blake the Great first game jam versus the Blazers in early November. Though it early, it appears that no player in the last seven-to-eight years, besides Boozer, has brought this type of physical intimidation and ferocity close to the basket. Knowing that a player can get up that high and cram it that strong puts the palpablenessof fear in any opponent, just ask Frederic Weiss, a laring; Vince Carter over-the-head jam, or any of Shaq dunk victims. Anyone who saw Griffin Reebok New England Patriots #12 Tom Brady Realtree camo Jersey
Oklahoma career knew what was coming, but just like a cock-backed 84 Jordan, some players arrive once their proverbial chains are ripped off. After an entire year waiting and recovering from a scary knee-injury, watching Derrick Rose holding his rookie award, and remembering his coach father careful tutelage and heart speaking to him gave all the fuel he needed to step back on the court and dominate. Now number 32, barring injury or lockouts, will be an all-star, and, if he keeps playing like it, a champion in the years to come.

24 Dec 10 Can Evan Turner and Andre Iguodala Play Well Together?

Al Bello/Getty ImagesA No. 2 overall pick and a really athletic small forward: Evan Turner and Andre Iguodala.Thesetwo people I name you areplayers with similar approaches to the game. When you hear those words, your first thought is, "Hey, these guys could have some potential."This was Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
my first thought too, but after thinking about it more, can they really play well together? There's a chance that it just won't work out. When fansdefend this they say, "They are too much alike," however, I don't think that's the problem.I thinkthe problem is that they both need the ball in their hands to be productive. At Ohio State, Turner was named 2010 National Player of the Year averaging over 20 points per game, 9.2 rebounds and six assists. He was theheart and soulof theOhio State offense. On to Iguodala, he has been the No. 1 guy in Philly ever since Allen Iverson left. Last season, Iggy put up solid numbers posting 17.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. He's used to being the No. 1 guy, butif a No. 1 guy on a team is averaging just 17 points per game, then what can heReebok San Francisco 49ers #21 Frank GORE Realtree camo Jersey
do if someone else comes in and wants to be the No. 1?Turner has huge potential and wants to make an immediate impact for the franchise. However, the team has been ran by Iguodala the past couple years. They are both scorers and need the ball in their hands to be productive. There's a chancethat this duocould turn out to be almost selfish play.If one has the ball, he's going to the net while the other sits and watches. There's definitely a possibility that one will do really good and the other will not. They each want to score and have the ball Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
at all times. So if they won't share are offense won't be productive. The Sixers are attempting to enter the stage of rebuilding, and we have failed numerous times in the past. Now theyfound Turner and they think heis the answer toare problems, however, there's a chance we may have missed the call once again.

my first thought too, but after thinking about it more, can they really play well together?

23 Dec 10Report: Toronto Raptors Set for Five-Player Swap With New Orleans Hornets

Chris Graythen/Getty ImagesAccording to Chris Sheridan of ESPN.com, the Toronto Raptors and New Orleans Hornets are set to complete a five-player trade that will see the Raptors trade point guard Jarrett Jack, center David Andersen and seldom-seen point guard Marcus Banks to the Hornets for Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless. The acquisition of Stojakovic and his roughly $15 million expiring contract means the Raptors, if anything, acquire a very attractive expiring contract as part of the deal, along with the best prospect in the Oakland Raiders jersey
deal.Jack has started for the Raptors this season, but Jose Calderon has shown to be the more consistent guard this season despite his defensive shortcomings.Andersen was playing backup center duties with the Raptors behind Andrea Bargnani. However, with the return of Ed Davis expected soon, the club deemed Andersen expendable. Banks really has not seen the floor much this season, and is essentially just an expiring deal the Hornets would be acquiring—nothing more, nothing less. This deal has some question marks, however, as the Hornets acquired Bayless from the Portland Trail Blazers in October and cannot trade him as part of a trade package until December 23rd according to NBA rules (60 days).Bayless can be traded as part of a one-for-one trade though. This proposed deal could be done in two steps instead of one as a result.Jerryd BaylessChris Graythen/Getty ImagesBayless, who is playing backup point guard to Chris Paul, is averaging 4.5 points per game and 2.5 assists per game with the Hornets this season. Taken 11th overall by the Pacers in 2008, Bayless has yet to reach his potential he had coming out of Arizona.Stojakovic is mired in one of his worst seasons as a pro this year, only averaging 7.5 points a game and one rebound a game. One important thing to note, he is seeing about half the court time he usually does this season, so you could essentially double those numbers. He's shooting an 11-for-25 from beyond the arc this season, good for a 44.5 percent three point Philadelphia Eagles jersey
field goal percentage while only playing 89 total minutes in six games. He's basically only played two full games with the Hornets. The deal on the surface benefits both sides here. Jack gives the Hornets a backup point guard they sorely need as well as getting out from under a terrible contract in Stojakovic. For the Raptors, they end the point guard debates they've been having for years, as Calderon will be the starter and the backup point guard will more than likely go to Leandro Barbosa. Meanwhile Peja Stojakovic will likely be the backup small forward for the Raptors.Calderon/Barbosa/BaylessJose Calderon, with this move, becomes Toronto's starting point guard.Chris Graythen/Getty ImagesDeRozan/WeemsKleiza/Stojakovic (Expiring)/Wright (Expiring)Evans (Expiring)/DavisBargnani/JohnsonThat would be the likely rotation the Raptors will settle on.If anything, this deal also gives the Raptors quite a trade chip in Stojakovic. Along with a nearly $14.5 million traded player exemption, the Raptors boast quite the trading package for teams looking to unload salary. The Raptors have holes just about everywhere now on this roster. The team could use a shot blocking, rebounding center who can defend along with a legit Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
starting point guard, and maybe a wingman who can create their own shot. Those positions remain to be filled, but all in all, this trade should be a good thing for the Raptors. It won't make them that much better, but it certainly won't make them worse.
