Depth may be strength for Titans’ defense

The Titans' defense surrendered the fifth-most yards in the NFL last season, but its play in the preseason has been encouraging. Of football jersey particular note is Tennessee's depth, particularly along the defensive line. Although DEs Derrick Morgan(notes) and William Hayes(notes) and DT Tony Brown(notes) all have missed significant stretches of the summer with injuries, the D-line play has not been a weakness in the preseason. "It gives us a comfort level knowing that we have depth, we have a rotation, and we have guys that know how to get to the quarterback," Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said of the defensive line. The secondary depth also appears improved with rookie CB Alterraun Verner(notes) quickly making an impact. Poor pass defense hurt Tennessee a season ago — only the Lions gave up more yards through the air — and the Steelers jersey Titans' pass coverage and pass-rush pressure remain issues to watch, but the early signs are positive.
